TUMMY TUCK
(ABDOMINOPLASTY)

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a plastic surgery procedure that is designed to remove the excess fat and sagging skin left behind by pregnancy or weight loss. Those who have lost a significant amount of weight, recently had a child, or have stubborn fat around the abdomen that will not go away with diet and exercise alone, can benefit greatly from an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery.

Candidates for Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

The best candidates for tummy tuck are those who have excessive fat or skin on the abdomen. Abdominoplasty patients are expected to be in a good physical condition so they’re able to tolerate the procedure. If you have recently had children and you are not planning to have any more, you are a good candidate as well. If you plan on having more children or are not sure, you should wait to have the procedure until you are completely sure that you are done having kids, as pregnancy will reverse the results. The normal process of aging can also cause the sagging of abdominal skin, so many older adults are good candidates as well. Our doctors will let you know if you are an ideal abdominoplasty candidate during your initial consultation.

Abdominoplasty
Procedure Overview

Abdominoplasty surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, but can also be done using a local anesthetic with heavy sedation. The procedure itself takes between two and five hours to complete. There are two incisions made, the first across the abdomen from one hipbone to the other, and the second is made around the belly button.

The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall to allow the muscles of the abdomen to be stitched into their new position. This allows the stomach to be flatter and more toned. The excess skin is then stretched out and removed from the abdomen. After the procedure is finished, the skin is draped back over the abdomen and sutured back into place and the belly button is moved to its new position.

Abdominoplasty Recovery

For patients considering plastic surgery to transform their bodies, the tummy tuck procedure has remained quite popular over the years. A tummy tuck may help patients who feel embarrassed or self-conscious about their midsection regain their confidence after major weight-loss, pregnancy and/or c-section delivery, among other causes of loss of skin elasticity in this area of the body.

While misconceptions about tummy tuck recovery may turn some patients off of the idea, recent innovations in plastic surgery have made the recovery time much quicker and the healing process less painful than ever before.

Dr. Robert Goldstein is among the most practiced and well-respected board-certified cosmetic professionals in the business. Under the care of Dr. Goldstein, your surgery and recovery are guaranteed to be convenient, comfortable, and cost-efficient. While every patient experiences tummy tuck recovery differently, the Bronx Plastic Surgery staff are careful to take the steps necessary to ensure you have the best available pain management and are healing properly while in recovery.

The recovery time for a tummy tuck procedure can take up to 6 weeks. Patients will be able to go back to work after 2-4 weeks; however, strenuous activities should not be performed until at least 4 weeks have passed. The scars will begin to fade away after about three months, and after a few years, they will be hardly noticeable.

The results of abdominoplasty surgery include a flat stomach with no excess or sagging skin. The abdominal muscles will look more toned after recovery and the results will last as long as you follow a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
